If you were looking forward to playing Star Wars Battlefront 2 this holiday season, you may want to hold off on buying it. Unless you plan on spending a bunch of extra cash beyond the $60 retail price just to unlock classic characters like Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader, that is.

And reddit isn’t happy about it. At all.

Developer EA’s chipper reply to a gamer who plunked down more than $80 on the game — only to find Darth Vader locked behind a paywall — has become the most downvoted comment in reddit history.

The intent is to provide players with a sense of pride and accomplishment for unlocking different heroes.

As for cost, we selected initial values based upon data from the Open Beta and other adjustments made to milestone rewards before launch. Among other things, we’re looking at average per-player credit earn rates on a daily basis, and we’ll be making constant adjustments to ensure that players have challenges that are compelling, rewarding, and of course attainable via gameplay.

We appreciate the candid feedback, and the passion the community has put forth around the current topics here on Reddit, our forums and across numerous social media outlets.

Our team will continue to make changes and monitor community feedback and update everyone as soon and as often as we can.

The post currently has close to 700,000 downvotes.

I think the community feedback is crystal clear… players who spend $60+ on a video game actually expect to get a whole game.

Some would argue that console games have become DLC crazy as of late, but DLC content was always optional and additive to the experience. Locking away advertised iconic characters and then demanding that the players cough up additional money to play as them is… shady.

Here’s hoping that EA takes over a half a million downvotes as “candid feedback” sufficient enough to do a course correction. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a pre-order to cancel.
