It’s right there in my bio on the sidebar: “Likes doughnuts way too much.” Been like that for years. So you might imagine I’m just a little excited about Voodoo Doughnut coming to Universal CityWalk this spring.

In preparation, I had the chance to visit the original Portland locations and meet with the two founders, Tres Shannon and Kenneth “Cat Daddy” Pogson. Take a look at an interview they did with their very own Voodoo Doll doughnut while I was there:

Over the course of my visit—and over many, many doughnuts—here are a few things I learned about one of the most delightfully weird brands in the food business.

Voodoo Doughnut started in Portland, OR more than 15 years ago

When they first opened Voodoo Doughnut, Tres and Cat Daddy literally sold their doughnuts out of a door at their original location. Almost 20 years later, they’re adding their seventh location here at Universal Orlando Resortthe first on the east coast.

One of the first doughnuts they ever made was the iconic Voodoo Doll doughnut

While still learning how to make doughnuts—from guys Tres calls “old, grizzled doughnuts veterans”—they created the Voodoo Doll doughnut. The shape would become a hallmark of their brand.

The first store was originally open from 10PM–10AM

Tres has long been a part of the Portland music scene. So their original hours were to serve musicians and night owls as much as anyone else.

To help get the store off the ground, Tres and Cat Daddy would sometimes sleep in a cot above the kitchen

You want to talk about #hustle? The founders would make doughnuts in the afternoon, be open all night, then sleep at the store. Only to wake up, go shopping for ingredients, and go back to the grind.

More Than 50 types of doughnuts will be available at Universal CityWalk in Orlando

If you saw the menu reveal last week, you know what I’m talking about. If you didn’t, go check it out. MORE THAN 50!

This is the second Voodoo Doughnut location at a Universal theme park

Universal Studios Hollywood opened a Voodoo Doughnut in 2017.

Look up when you’re in the Portland stores and you’ll see Tres and Cat Daddy—among others—represented in stained glass.

Voodoo Doughnut makes a range of Vegan doughnuts

If going vegan is your thing, your thing can be found here. A variety of Voodoo Doughnut’s most popular creations are made vegan.

The Universal Orlando location will be next to NBC Sports Grill & Brew

Enter CityWalk and hang a right, like you’re heading towards Universal Studios Florida. The bright pink store will be on your right before you pass NBC Sports Grill & Brew. Your nose will guide you.

    Voodoo Doughnut creates Tribute Doughnuts

When a historical figure, pop icon, or famous person passes on, Voodoo Doughnut celebrates their passing by creating specialty memorial doughnuts for display in their stores. It’s a way to honor their contributions and for the staff to express their art and creativity.

If you haven’t started thinking about which doughnut you want to try first, “you better get on your horse and get goin’!” as Tres says. Voodoo Doughnut opens this Spring at CityWalk in Universal Orlando Resort.

    I know I’m hungry.
